Barranquilla’s biggest cultural event is Carnaval, recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage tradition. It takes place every year during the four days before Lent and brings together dances and musical expressions shaped by Indigenous, African, and European influences.
If you are in Barranquilla around Carnaval:
Book housing early.
Expect traffic and road changes.
Plan transportation carefully.
Protect your phone and valuables.
Hydrate.
Wear comfortable shoes.
Understand that normal routines may pause.
Outside Carnaval, heat shapes daily life. AC, malls, shaded routes, early errands, and transport choices all matter. Barranquilla is very livable for the right person, but the climate and social rhythm are part of the package.
