First-Month Costs Are Not Normal Monthly Costs

The first month abroad is usually more expensive than people expect.

You may pay for:

Airbnb or temporary housing
Deposits
Furniture
Kitchen items
Bedding and towels
SIM card and phone plan
Taxi/app rides while learning the city
Visa paperwork
Apostilles/translations
Medical appointments
Insurance setup
Coworking
Mistakes
Convenience purchases
Eating out because you are tired

Do not judge your long-term Colombia budget by your first month. But also do not ignore it. Moving has startup costs, and those costs can make a “cheap” country feel expensive at first.

A realistic relocation budget should include both monthly living costs and setup costs.
