Santa Marta Basics for Newcomers

Santa Marta is not just a beach city. It is a nature base.

You have the Caribbean coast, the Sierra Nevada, Minca, Tayrona, Taganga, El Rodadero, Bello Horizonte, the historic center, and routes toward Palomino and La Guajira.

Daily-life areas feel very different:

Centro Histórico: energy, history, nightlife, restaurants
El Rodadero: practical, touristy, beach access
Bello Horizonte/Pozos Colorados: calmer, more residential/resort-style
Taganga: sunsets, diving, backpacker feel, rougher edges
Minca: cooler, mountain lifestyle, not the same as city living

Tayrona is one of the region’s biggest draws, but it must be planned. Official park information lists different entrance hours by sector, including Zaino, Calabazo, Palangana, and Bahía Concha, and visitors should check current conditions before going.
